Section Felling / Dismantling / Rigging This may be necessary in the case of dead, dying or dangerous trees, or if the tree has simply outgrown its location and is no longer suitable. Our arborists are suitably qualified and experienced to section-fell trees which are growing in a confined space. We can remove all arising material or if required the timber can be left on site to be used as fire wood. The tree may have to be dismantled using approved rigging techniques involving safely lowering large branches and the tree stem to the ground in a controlled environment using ropes and rigging blocks to avoid damage to property in close proximity to the dangerous tree being removed. It is a highly skilled operation which requires a high level of experience and training.

Mulching and Chipping

Most felling operations face a need to get rid of branches and tree tops left after the timber is harvested from a site. Woodchips make excellent mulch for trees and shrubs. A three-inch layer of woodchips will prevent the growth of weeds or grass around the base of the tree. Mulching also conserves moisture, prevents erosion, moderates soil temperatures, and adds organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Woodchips are slow to break down, so they do not have to be replaced as often as some other mulch materials.

Crown Reduction

This involves the reduction of a tree's crown back to a growth point to achieve a particular shape or restrict a tree's crown spread. The reduction is carried out in a sympathetic manner which is not detrimental to the health of the tree. This type of work can be carried out on a tree where the root system is thought to be unstable, in an effort to stabilise the tree.

Crown Lifting

Removes the lower branches from a tree in order to provide clearance for buildings, vehicles, pedestrians, and vistas. Lifting the crown can make a tree stand out more and make it a focal point in its location. Thinning is the selective removal of branches to increase light penetration and air movement through the crown. Thinning should reduce the weight on heavy limbs while still retaining the tree's natural shape. Crown thinning does not alter the overall size or shape of the tree and we do not normally remove more than 30% of the overall tree.

Tree Felling

Tree felling requires the tree to be knocked in one full section depending on its location and proximity to buildings and other valuable commodities and also the trees growth habits and condition as it may be leaning heavily in the opposite direction to the desired felling location or badly decayed. Felling a heavily leaning and often diseased trees is a dangerous and highly skilful job which requires a high level of experience and training.

  • I am very satisfied with the work carried out by Darren Kilcoyne tree surgeon. Darren topped trees, making them much safer, neater, opening up more light He was very neat in tidying up, left logs neatly piled, spread mulch carefully. I would be happy to recommend him for all tree work.

  • Darren Kilcoyne at Kilcoyne Tree Surgery carried out work for my dad. The job included dismantling a dead and dangerous Ash tree, which was close to the house. The Ash tree was logged, split and put in the shed. The garden was left tidy. Darren was very knowledgeable on all aspects of tree care and advised on other work that needed to be done to other trees, especially new trees to ensure they grew to their full potential, and he came back on another occasion to carry out these works. I would definitely call Darren again..
